Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, melted
  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan with butter and line the bottom with parchment paper. Set aside.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla. Slowly add the dry ingredients and the buttermilk, alternating between the two, until all ingredients are combined. Divide the batter in half.

Step 4

To one half of the batter, add the cocoa powder and melted chocolate, stirring until combined. (If using, add mini chocolate chips to the chocolate batter.) Pour the chocolate batter into the prepared loaf pan, followed by the plain batter. Using a knife, swirl the batters together to create a marble effect.

Step 5

Bake for 45-50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn the cake out onto a cooling rack to cool completely.
