- 4 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
- Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

- Grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
- Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Divide the batter evenly between the two pans.
- To one of the pans, add the cocoa powder, and mix until well combined.
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes come out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cool, use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes from the cakes.
- Stack the cakes with frosting in between the layers, and decorate as desired. Enjoy!
